However, this goal was narrowly missed by 3% as 67.1% of American adults were administered a dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. With Covid-19 cases once again rising to the 100K daily mark, it’s distressing that large numbers of Americans are still not partially/fully vaccinated (Including the anti-vaxxers). Now, thankfully, a new lab study claims to create a common drug that can reduce the Covid-19 cases up to 70%. The research team led by the Keele University in the U.K, the University of Birmingham, and the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Italy have confirmed the use of fenofibrate and its active form, fenofibric acid, has the ability to reduce the SARS-COV-2 infection considerably. This fenofibric acid is mainly used in a drug that’s already licensed by the FDA can be used to treat infirmities like high levels of lipids and cholesterol in human blood. Now after this positive discovery of a possible Covid-19 drug, the research teams now want to run a clinical trial on already hospitalized COVID-19 patients. At the time of writing this post, such a trial is being conducted in the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (USA) and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (Israel). Corresponding author Dr. Farhat Khanim 1 out of the three research facilities (University of Birmingham) had to say this on the newly discovered drug: “The development of new more infectious SARS-CoV-2 variants has resulted in a rapid expansion in infection rates and deaths in several countries around the world, especially the UK, US, and Europe. Whilst vaccine programs will hopefully reduce infection rates and virus spread in the longer term, there is still an urgent need to expand our arsenal of drugs to treat SARS-CoV-2-positive patients.”
